Are you gearing up for your next Sportlink 10K Series event?

Whether you’re chasing a PB, climbing the leaderboard, or just looking to enjoy the race, preparation is key. Here are five essential tips to help you make the most of your next race day.

1. Perfect your pacing

Going out too fast is one of the biggest mistakes runners make. Start controlled, settle into your race pace by the first kilometre, and save enough energy for a strong finish. Check the course profile in advance and adjust your pace accordingly – especially if there are hills.

2. Fuel and hydrate smart

Even for a 10K, hydration and fueling matter. Stay well-hydrated in the 24 hours before the race and, if it’s a warm day, make use of the water station to keep your effort steady. Avoid last-minute caffeine or gels that you haven’t tested in training.

3. Nail your warm-up routine

A good warm-up primes your body for racing. Include a light jog, dynamic stretches, and strides to get your heart rate up. A well-executed warm-up means you’ll hit your target pace faster when the race starts.

4. Stick to the racing line

Courses with lots of turns can add extra meters if you’re not careful. Stick to the racing line by running the shortest possible route – this could save you crucial seconds and help with pacing accuracy.

5. Stay strong in kilometres 6-8

The toughest part of a 10K often comes between kilometres 6-8. You’re past the halfway mark, fatigue is setting in, but the finish still feels far away. This is where mental strength comes in – focus on keeping your form, staying relaxed, and maintaining your pace. The final kilometre often takes care of itself with the excitement of the finish line approaching, so push through this mid-race challenge to set yourself up for a strong finish.

Bonus tip: Enjoy it!

The Sportlink 10K Series is about more than just times – it’s a great way to race alongside fellow runners, challenge yourself, and be part of the local running community. Whatever your goal, make sure to enjoy the experience and celebrate your run.
