City of Norwich AC’s Sarah Barrett claimed a memorable win at the Wroxham 5K on Wednesday night, clocking 17:02 in a fiercely contested women’s race.
Barrett edged out clubmate Mabel Beckett, who finished second in 17:10, with Grace Buchanan of North Norfolk Beach Harriers just two seconds behind in third with 17:12 – in a very tight finish.
It was a night to remember for Barrett, although it came at a cost, with a dramatic post-race moment that saw her briefly requiring medical attention.
“I felt really good in the race,” said Barrett, who claimed the county championship title in the process. “I got a bit stuck in the first kilometre and then I just tried to wind up from there.

“I think my fourth kilometre was my quickest and I probably over-pushed it a little bit at the end because I ended up in the ambulance! But it was a good run – close to my PB – and all in all, it’s nice to take the win.”
Despite the concerning finish, Barrett was quick to thank everyone who supported her.
“Everyone was really nice and came to check in on me. The ambulance crew were brilliant – they got me sorted quickly and made sure I was okay.”
The Wroxham 5K is known for its fast course and buzzing atmosphere – and Barrett echoed that sentiment.
“Wroxham is such a nice event because you get to see everyone again – it’s basically the who’s who of Norfolk running. So it’s really nice.”
