Callum Bowen-Jones produced a decisive move in the closing stages to secure victory at the Great Yarmouth Half Marathon on Sunday – race nine in the Sportlink Grand Prix Series.
In hot conditions on the undulating countryside route, the Newham & Essex Beagles athlete went head-to-head with City of Norwich AC’s Harry Allcock for much of the race before pulling away with just over two miles remaining to take the win in 1:11:33.
“It took until about 10 and a half miles,” said Bowen-Jones. “He took a couple of miles on at one point and then I did the same. We tried to break each other but luckily at about 10 and a half miles I managed to pull away and keep pulling.”
The win marked an encouraging return to form for Bowen-Jones, who missed much of the spring through injury. Now back in full training, his sights are firmly set on his marathon debut in Frankfurt this October.
“It was hot and painful after a big week of training,” he said. “It’s good to top off another good week’s training at the end of the day. I’m not sure what’s next – I’ve got a few races that Dad and Neil have sorted out – half marathons and 10 milers – all part of the training for the marathon.”
The Great Yarmouth Half Marathon is organised by Great Yarmouth Road Runners, who once again did a sterling job of hosting in the challenging conditions, with plenty of water available for competitors throughout the 13.1-mile course.
The final race in the 2025 Sportlink Grand Prix Series takes place next month when the Bure Valley Harriers host the BVH 10. You can get your place here.
