Smith wins World Championship bronze at IAU 50km World Road Running Championships

Logan Smith delivered a superb performance to finish third at the IAU 50km World Road Running Championships in New Delhi, India.

The 28-year-old, who works at Sportlink in Taverham and lives in Cromer, claimed the bronze medal while representing Great Britain & Northern Ireland for the first time, helping secure a dominant British performance on the world stage.

Smith crossed the line in 2:47:29 after a controlled and consistent run over the 50km distance. Alex Milne took top spot in 2:49:09 with Charlie Davis second in 2:47:14.

All three runners finished under the previous European best of 2:48:27, set by France’s Guillaume Ruel, securing a remarkable GB & NI clean sweep of the podium.

It was part of an extraordinary team performance, with British athletes finishing first through to sixth overall to comfortably win team gold. India finished second in the team standings, with the United States taking third.

Consistent pacing pays off

Smith, who trains with the Norwich Distance Squad under head coach James Senior, said afterwards that he exceeded his own expectations heading into the race.

“I came here thinking I’d be happy walking away with a top-10 individual performance,” said Smith. “Maybe top three on a perfect day if everything went right – but I wasn’t counting on it feeling that good on the day.”

His race execution proved key, maintaining remarkably even splits across the full 50km distance.

“My splits were pretty consistent,” he added. “My fastest mile was 5:17 and my slowest was 5:24 – a seven second variation over 31 miles. I’m really proud of that.”

The result leaves Smith among the fastest European 50km runners in history: “Third best 50km runner in the world and third fastest European of all time – I’m just trying to soak it all in and enjoy the moment.”

British women also secure team success
