As part of a regular feature on the Sportlink Grand Prix website we asked chairman of the Athletics Norfolk Road Race committee Ceri Theobald 10 questions about his running journey…
When did you start running?
I started running in 2019. I had managed to drop around five stone and found that running was now a bit easier. My wife and I both joined Gazelles around that time and haven’t looked back.
What’s your favourite distance to run?
I think probably half marathon. Takes training to do it well but doesn’t require out and out speed.
What’s your favourite event and why?
Valentine’s 10K as it is my chance to give something back. I like being able to put on a race that so many enjoy. To run my favourite is probably Worsted 5 mile as I love the relaxed feel of the race and venue.
What was your proudest run?
My first London marathon. Having weighed over 18 stone I never thought I would achieve it but to get a 3:45 marathon felt like a massive personal achievement.
You’ve got a 10K training run to fit in, in Norfolk, where are you heading?
We spend a lot of time on the coast so probably somewhere close to our caravan in Eccles on Sea. I love being able to dip my feet in the sea at the end of the run.
Who is your biggest running inspiration?
Phil Whiting, I think what he does within our club to support others and inspire them to be as good as they can be is inspiring. He also has completed the Arc of Attrition on third attempt. Plus anyone that undertakes the Berkeley marathons.
What motivates you to run?
It is such a positive on my mental health. I have a pretty full-on job, so being able to get outside and clear my head is a real release.
What are your favourite running trainers?
I am afraid to say some black and pink Nike Vaporfly, definitely a fan of carbon plates.
Tell us something we didn’t know about you as a runner…
I don’t really like running….. I love it afterwards but I am definitely a love the achievement having done it but don’t enjoy the process (it hurts too much).
What excites you the most about the 2025 Sportlink Grand Prix and 10K Series?
I think trying something new is always exciting and 10k feels like a distance that we could all target to improve. I love the idea I can be part of a team and really contribute.
